Teaching

Bailey is a devoted pedagogue who teaches students of all levels, from beginning to advanced. For her young students, she teaches the Suzuki Method. Proudly a former Suzuki student herself, she completed Suzuki teacher training with Vera McCoy-Sulentic and Mark Mutter. She is now an accredited teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and Suzuki Musique Montréal. In addition, Bailey completed string pedagogy courses at Northwestern University with Stacia Spencer.

Other pedagogical experiences have shaped Bailey’s teaching. As a former participant in the Global Leaders Institute for Arts Innovation, she had the opportunity to work with El Sistema-inspired programs in Kenya and Mexico, which focus on music as a means of social change. Bailey strongly believes that learning a musical instrument can have a positive impact on one’s character. As Suzuki said, “Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline, and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”

In addition to her Suzuki background, Bailey owes much of her teaching style—especially at the advanced level—to her teachers Blair Milton (Northwestern University) and Violaine Melançon (McGill University). She also feels just as comfortable coaching chamber music as teaching private lessons, thanks to her many coachings with the Dover Quartet and Mathias Tacke (former violinist of the Vermeer Quartet).
